This Is the End opens today, and you should totally go see it.  In a clever bit of cross-promotion, a new parody has This Is the End stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel, and Danny McBride stuck in a Portland The Real World house with Portlandia stars Joi Niemeyer and Averey Tressler co-star, and while their fans might be a bit disappointed that all of the jokes come from the guys, it's still a damn fine parody of The Real World.  It also shows off the great comic dynamic fans will see in This Is the End without giving away any jokes from the movie. Hit the jump to check out the parody.  The Real World: Portland finale also airs today in case you care. Via MTV.

TOP 5: MAN OF STEEL, First Trailer and Poster for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, THIS IS THE END, New ELYSIUM Trailer, E3 2013 Recap

Was there really a chance of writing about something other than Man of Steel in this week's opening paragraph? Well, maybe. I did really enjoy This Is the End. But, alas, this week is about Supes' return to the big screen. I watched the film (in 2D) for the first time last night and, as far as superhero movies go, it elicited an emotional response from me that few in the genre have. Sure, there were times where the grand scale of destruction left me cold and the product placement took me out of the moment (if only to admire some beautiful appliances meeting their untimely demise). Nevertheless, the themes of love, sacrifice, acceptance, and trust were beautifully woven into the film's text in such a way that it made me do something I've only done one other time (while reading Grant Morrison's excellent All-Star Superman run): become emotionally invested in the Man of Steel. While this is undoubtedly Kal-El's weekend, in addition to Man of Steel interviews and more, this week's Top 5 also includes the first teaser trailer and poster for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, This Is the End interviews with Seth Rogen and more, the new Elysium trailer, and a recap of E3 2013 from the convention floor. Learn more about all of the above via a link and brief recap after the jump. 1. Weekend Box Office: MAN OF STEEL Soars to New June Record with $113 Million

After months of speculation, we have an answer: on its first weekend in theatres Man of Steel earned an estimated $113 million from 4,207 locations. That does not include the $12 million from its Thursday evening previews, but the number was still big enough to give Superman the new record for June.  Title Weekend Total 1.  Man of Steel $113,080,000 $125 2.  This Is The End $20,500,000 $32.8 3.  Now You See Me $10,320,000 $80 4.  Fast & Furious 6 $9,400,000 $219.5 5.  The Purge $8,200,000 $51.8 6.  The Internship $7,000,000 $30.9 7.  Epic $6,000,000 $95.4 8.  Star Trek Into Darkness $5,660,000 $210.4 9.  After Earth $3,750,000 $54.2 10.  Iron Man 3 $2,908,000 $399.6 The previous weekend record for June was set in 2010 by Toy Story 3 with $110.3 million, ahead of the $108.9 million of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Tf2’s number did not include its first three days, however, which add up to $127.8 million. Much more relevant to Warner Bros. is the fact that Man of Steel more than doubled the opening of Superman Returns. In June of 2006, the studio’s last stab at Superman debuted with $52.5 million on its way to a $200 million US total and $391 million worldwide. The legacy of Superman Returns played a big role in the genesis of Man of Steel. The lukewarm reaction to Bryan Singer’s feature meant that Warner Bros. would have to start from scratch to give the DC universe another shot at challenging Marvel’s slate of successful superhero properties. By now you probably know the origin story of the new Superman film – Nolan, Goyer, Snyder and Cavill – but what remained unknown was how MoS would be received by audiences. From the start, expectations ranged widely. WB set a ...

Teaser Trailer for HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

DreamWorks Animation has released the first teaser trailer for How to Train Your Dragon 2.  The movie picks up five years after the first installment, and has Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless exploring new territories while the rest of his friends are enjoying dragon races.  During one of Hiccup and Toothless' journeys, they discover "a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, and the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace."  None of that plot is conveyed in this teaser trailer.  Instead, it throws us back to the joy of the flying sequences in the first movie, and then ups the ante.  We see a confident (and hot) Hiccup pulling daredevil stunts, and for a teaser trailer, it's a perfect announcement that the sequel is on the way.  I can't wait for this movie. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also features the voices of Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig, Kit Harrington, and Gerard Butler.  How to Train Your Dragon 2 opens in 3D on June 20, 2014. Via CS. Here's the synopsis for How to Train Your Dragon 2: The thrilling second chapter of the epic "How to Train Your Dragon" trilogy brings back the fantastical world of Hiccup and Toothless five years later. First Trailer for ROBOCOP Remake Starring Joel Kinnaman, Abbie Cornish, and Gary Oldman

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for director Jose Padilha’s remake of RoboCop.  While it's already getting plenty of snark from internet grumps, I rather enjoyed this first look at the new film.  Sure, it's got a bit of a Total Recall or [insert recent sci-fi movie] vibe going on, but there's plenty here to suggest that the filmmakers will give nods to fans of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original while putting their own stamp on the new iteration.  Star Joel Kinnaman looks to be charismatic as Alex Murphy, a trait that he'll struggle to regain once making his transformation.  There's plenty of screentime to go around as we also get looks at Samuel L. Jackson's media mogul, Michael Keaton's string-pulling CEO and Gary Oldman's conflicted scientist.  There's plenty to look forward to, so let's not lose our collective shit just yet. Hit the jump to watch the trailer and, while you're at it, check out these newly-released official images from the film.  The film also stars Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel, and Jackie Earle Haley.   RoboCop opens February 7, 2014. Click over to Apple to watch in HD.  While the trailer does a nice job at setting up the story, it almost gives too much away (ie what happens to Murphy to set him up as RoboCop and where the plot goes from there to what is, presumably, the third act).  As is the case with many trailers these days, a bit of spoilery caution is advised. Here's the official synopsis for RoboCop: In RoboCop, the ...

Jay Baruchel Talks THE ART OF THE STEAL, the GOON Sequel, the Success of THIS IS THE END, Seeing a Rough Cut of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2, More

One of the many films to premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival was writer-director Jonathan Sobol's The Art of the Steal.  Loaded with a great cast featuring Kurt Russell, Matt Dillon, Jay Baruchel, Terence Stamp, Katheryn Winnick, Jason Jones, and Chris Diamantopoulos, the film is about a small group that teams up to steal one of the most valuable books in the world.  While I wasn't sure what to expect going in, I had a blast watching The Art of the Steal.  The pic is a fresh take on the heist genre, and it's loaded with great dialogue and fun set pieces.  While I'm not sure when it's going to be released in America, it's definitely worth checking out down the road. Shortly after the premiere, I landed an extended video interview with Jay Baruchel.  During our wide-ranging conversation we talked about being at TIFF, what The Art of the Steal is about, what it was like for Baruchel to work with Kurt Russell and Terence Stamp, what he collects, the reception to This Is the End, the Goon sequel (and what it's about), and more.  In addition, he talked about how he'd just seen the rough cut of How to Train Your Dragon 2, who he plays in the Robocop remake, and future projects like his pilot for ABC, and his comic book adaptation, Random Acts of Violence, which is in development.  Hit the jump to watch. Bill Murray and Jay Baruchel in Talks to Join Cameron Crowe’s Untitled Hawaii Project

Filming is already underway in Hawaii on writer/director Cameron Crowe’s untitled next film, but the filmmaker is adding two fantastic last-minute additions to the cast.  The Wrap reports that Bill Murray is in talks to join the pic, while THR reports that Jay Baruchel has signed on to reunite with his Almost Famous helmer.  Bradley Cooper stars in the romantic comedy as a defense contractor overseeing a weapons satellite launch from Hawaii who teams up with (and falls for) an Air Force pilot (Emma Stone) to scuttle the launch.  Mystical island forces also play a role in the story. Murray’s character is being kept under wraps, but Baruchel will be playing the step brother of Cooper’s character.  Baruchel makes a great addition to the ensemble, and the thought of Murray and Crowe teaming up on a feature is incredibly promising.  The swell cast also includes Rachel McAdams, Alec Baldwin, and Danny McBride.  Murray will next be seen in George Clooney’s WWII pic The Monuments Men, which opens this December.

THIS IS THE END Blu-ray Review

Seth Rogen made a bold decision in his directorial debut This is the End (which he co-wrote and co-directed with Evan Goldberg) that could have just as easily blown up in his face.  He stars as himself, as do his friends/co-stars Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson in this comedy about what happens when actors survive the rapture.  My review of the Blu-ray of This is the End follows after the jump. The film opens with Seth picking up Jay from the airport.  Jay lives in Canada and doesn’t like the LA scene, and so he’s reluctant to go to a party at James Franco’s house, as he knows Seth might abandon him while he chats up more famous people.  They go anyway and there are celebs at the party, including a very coked up Michael Cera (in a hilarious play on his nice guy image), Rihanna and Emma Watson, to name a few.  Jay wants to get some cigarettes, and so Seth tags along as Jay grumbles that what he feared would happen is exactly what happened, and he felt abandoned.  But then the rapture happens, and the world is thrown in a post-apocalyptic frenzy as the good are raptured up to heaven, while everyone else stays on Earth.  As the two make it back to Franco’s, the film gets one of its best jokes: no one at the party noticed because none are good enough to go to heaven. Then a sinkhole appears outside of ...

MGM and Sony have just released the new trailer and poster for Jose Padilha's remake of Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop.  The film takes place in 2028 and finds the sleazy OminiCorp putting its drone technology to use on domestic grounds by way of taking blown-apart cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) and turning him into a cyborg police officer.  The experiment on Murphy is meant to be the first of many RoboCops that the company hopes to put in every city around the country, but obviously things don’t go as planned.  For me, this trailer is not a good sign.  None of the action looks particularly interesting and the few laugh lines ("Robophobic", "Good Cop/RoboCop") land with a thud.  I think we could be looking at a movie that's just as pointless as the remake of Verhoeven's Total Recall. Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster.  The film also stars Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Radius-TWC has released the first trailer for director Jonathan Sobol new film The Art of the Steal.  Led by Kurt Russell, the comedy tells the story of a small group of crooks who team up to steal one of the most valuable books in the world.  The trailer teases a fun Ocean’s Eleven-style caper with plenty of comedic interplay between the ensemble cast, which also includes Jay Baruchel, Matt Dillon, and Jason Jones.  Steve was a big fan of the film when he caught it at the Toronto International Film Festival, and if you missed them, be sure to watch his video interviews with Sobol and Baruchel. MGM and Sony Pictures have released five new images from RoboCop.  The film takes place in 2028 and finds the sleazy OminiCorp putting its drone technology to use on domestic grounds by way of taking blown-apart cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) and turning him into a cyborg police officer.  The experiment on Murphy is meant to be the first of many RoboCops the company hopes to put in every U.S. city, but things don’t go as planned.  In addition to giving us more images of the cast, the most noteworthy image shows us a suit that looks highly reminiscent of the iconic one from Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original.  This version looks pretty crappy, and that's probably intentional since Murphy is presumably meant to evolve from this fat, clunky suit to the sleek black one. We’ve got a couple of TV casting stories to report on today.  First up, Jay Baruchel has been tapped to lead a new FX comedy pilot called Man Seeking Woman, based on author Simon Rich’s book The Last Girlfriend on Earth.  THR reports that Baruchel will play “a naïve romantic on a desperate quest for love” in the potential half-hour comedy series, which is described as a sweet and absurd look at the life-and-death stakes of dating.  Jonathan Krisel (SNL) will executive produce and direct the pilot, with Lorne Michaels also acting as executive producer.  The show returns Baruchel to television after the actor shined on Judd Apatow’s short-lived Undeclared, and the pilot will be filmed in Toronto this spring. Additionally, a trio of very talented actors have joined Kyle Chandler in the new Netflix series from the creators of Damages.  Hit the jump for more. Reports at THR and Deadline have Sissy Spacek, Linda Cardellini, and Ben Mendelsohn (The Place Beyond the Pines) joining Friday Night Lights alum Kyle Chandler in a new untitled Netflix series, described as a psychological thriller.  The 13-episode show comes from Damages creators Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman, and Glenn Kessler and revolves around “a close-knit family of adult siblings whose secrets and scars are revealed when the black sheep oldest brother, Danny (Mendelsohn), returns home."  Chandler and Cardellini will play the other siblings, and Spacek will play the family’s matriarch. This is a high-profile show not only because it marks the next effort from the Damages ...

One of the most anticipated films of 2014 doesn’t involve superheroes or giant robots, but instead is an animated film focusing on (mostly) friendly dragons.  DreamWorks Animation will finally release the long-awaited sequel to 2010’s excellent How to Train Your Dragon this summer, and now a batch of new images from How to Train Your Dragon 2 has been released online.  The story picks up five years after the first installment, and has Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless exploring new territories while the rest of his friends are enjoying dragon races.  During one of Hiccup and Toothless’ journeys, they discover a secret ice cave, hundreds of new wild dragons, and the mysterious Dragon Rider.  These new images highlight the older versions of the characters from the first film, as well as a peek at the aforementioned Dragon Rider. DreamWorks Animation has released the first clip from the highly anticipated sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2, and it’ll make you want to revisit the first movie ASAP.  The follow-up takes place five years after the first installment, as Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless are exploring new territories while the rest of their friends are enjoying dragon races.  During one of Hiccup and Toothless’ journeys, they discover a secret ice cave, hundreds of new wild dragons, and the mysterious Dragon Rider.  This debut clip is brief, but the gorgeous animation coupled with the character humor and reprisal of composer John Powell’s theme is a wonderful reminder of just how lovely the first film is, and I cannot wait to see what the sequel has in store for us. DreamWorks Animation has released a new How to Train Your Dragon 2 trailer and poster.  Director Dean Deblois’ animated sequel takes place five years after the first installment, as Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless are exploring new territories while the rest of their friends are enjoying dragon races.  During one of Hiccup and Toothless’ journeys, they discover a secret ice cave, hundreds of new wild dragons, and the mysterious Dragon Rider.  This trailer has the blend of humor and drama I was hoping the movie would provide, and I'm surprised and encouraged that they're leaning more heavily on the emotional side than the comedy even though the jokes are still funny.  The first How to Train Your Dragon set a high bar.  The sequel could very well meet it.
